World steel production increased in August: Featured countries and changes

Crude steel production by region

• Africa produced 1.5 million tons of steel in August 2023, up by 16.1% from August 2022.
• Asia and Oceania produced 115.7 million tons of steel, up by 3.5%.
• The EU(27) produced 9.1 million tons of steel, down by 4.4%.
• Europe and other countries produced 3.4 million tons, down by 3.2%.
• The Middle East produced 2.8 million tons, down by 16.0%.
• North America produced 9.2 million tons, down by 2.6%.
• Russia and other CIS countries and Ukraine produced 7.5 million tons of steel, up by 10.7%.
• Steel production in South America fell by 8.1% to 3.4 million tons.

• China produced 86.4 million tons of steel in August 2023, up by 3.2% from August 2022.
• India produced 11.9 million tons of steel, up by 17.4%.
• Japan produced 7.1 million tons, down by 2.9%.
• The United States officially produced 7.0 million tons of steel, up by 1.1%.
• Russia is estimated to produce 6.4 million tons, up by 8.9%.
• South Korea produced 5.6 million tons of steel, down by 5.9%.
• Germany produced 2.8 million tons, down by 1.0%.
• Türkiye produced 2.8 million tons of steel, down by 2.9%.
• Brazil produced 2.7 million tons, down by 5.9%.
• Iran produced 1.6 million tons, down by 24.1%.
