Voestalpine breaks ground on Linz electric arc furnace project

Voestalpine laid the foundation for the "greentec steel" electric arc furnace project at its Linz site one month later than at its site in Donawitz.

Voestalpine breaks ground on Linz electric arc furnace project

Construction of the 1.6 million tonnes/year EAF in Linz will start in 2024 and is scheduled to be commissioned three years later. The plant will use a mixture of scrap, liquid pig iron and hot briquetted iron as feedstock.

This plant will join the 850,000 t/y EAF in Donawitz and together reduce CO2 emissions by around 30% from 2027. This corresponds to annual savings of around 4 million tonnes of CO2 or 5% of local emissions.

From 2030 onwards, the replacement of two more blast furnaces in Linz and Donawitz and an additional EAF investment in Linz are planned. In order to achieve net zero by 2050, the Group is researching various new processes and investing in pilot projects that explore new ways of producing steel.

"The two groundbreaking ceremonies in Linz and Donawitz are more than just a symbolic act and the start of a construction project. They are visible cornerstones of voestalpine's green future and an important milestone for climate protection in Austria," says CEO Herbert Eibensteiner.

The total investment in both projects amounts to EUR 1.5 billion ($1.6 billion), of which Linz accounts for around EUR 1 billion.
