Vietnam plans to increase coal production

Vietnam is calling for increased coal production to meet its energy needs ahead of the upcoming summer season. It is stated that the need for coal-fired energy production in the country has increased due to weak hydroelectricity production, especially in the Northern regions.

The government is asking local coal producers to increase their exploration capacity to prevent a repeat of last year's power outages. At a time when Vietnam is largely dependent on coal for its energy needs, it is reminded that power outages due to fuel shortage and hot weather in the country last summer affected many regions, including industrial parks.

According to data from the National Weather Agency, temperatures in some regions reached 40.4 degrees Celsius in April, the highest level since 2016. Additionally, the drop in water reserves to 25% of the seasonal average is seen as an additional concern during peak demand, which could limit electricity production.

Vietnam's electricity demand is expected to increase by 13% compared to previous estimates in the May-July period of this year, due to the effect of hot weather. The government aims to limit energy consumption in factories and homes by taking energy saving measures.

It is also stated that Vietnam has asked for help from China to close some of its electricity deficit. It is reported that Vietnam Electricity Group will increase electricity imports by 60% more than originally planned.

Finally, there is information that Vietnam continues to import liquefied natural gas and is trying to ensure the supply of imported gas despite the recent price increases.
