Türkiye ranks 3rd in Europe by increasing natural gas storage capacity

Türkiye is preparing to host one of the largest storage facilities in Europe by expanding its natural gas storage capacity.

Türkiye ranks 3rd in Europe by increasing natural gas storage capacity

The country is moving towards this goal with significant investments in natural gas supply and processing infrastructure in recent years.

Türkiye, which currently has an important infrastructure with the Silivri Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility (4.6 billion cubic meters capacity) and the Lake Tuz Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility (1.2 billion cubic meters capacity), is making intensive efforts to increase its capacity. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that they plan to increase the capacity of the  Silivri Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility to 5.6 or 6 billion cubic meters and announced that they aim to further increase the capacity of the facility in the next 2-3 years.

The capacity of the Lake Tuz Underground Natural Gas Storage Facility is planned to be increased to 8.8 billion cubic meters with the expansion works to be carried out until 2028. Thus, Türkiye's total natural gas storage capacity will reach 14.4 billion cubic meters. With this step, Türkiye will rise to the third place among the countries in Europe with approximately 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas storage capacity.

In Europe, where Germany ranks first with 24 billion cubic meters of capacity and Italy ranks second with 16 billion cubic meters, Türkiye is expected to become an important player with these expansion projects. This strong expansion of Türkiye's natural gas storage infrastructure will increase its efficiency in the energy sector and allow it to play a more important role in regional and global trade.
