Spanish government cuts tax on natural gas to 5 percent

According to the decision taken by the Council of Ministers, the tax rate on natural gas will be reduced from 21 percent to 5 percent, effective between October 1 and December 31. Teresa Ribera, Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Struggle, said in a statement to the press that the tax cut on natural gas will also apply to fuel pellets and briquettes, and that they aim to support domestic consumers and industrialists in the face of the energy crisis caused by the tension created by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Stating that they foresee a savings of 210 million Euros for natural gas users in a three-month period, Ribera stated that the tax reduction period will be extended if necessary.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on September 1 that there would be a tax cut on natural gas. Due to the energy crisis, the government has so far reduced the electricity bill-related taxes by 80 percent, and it has been stated that this will save 10 billion euros for taxpayers.
