Global pipe production surged in 2023

In 2023, global pipe production saw a significant increase of 15% compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 170 million tons, as reported by the International Pipe Producers Association (ITA).

Global pipe production surged in 2023

Following a minor decline in 2022, global pipe production rebounded, with expectations of continued growth in 2024, according to the association's notes. Forecasts for the current year are positive.

China, the largest contributor to global pipe production, experienced a remarkable 13% year-on-year growth, surpassing expectations. In India, production displayed uneven development, with a 22% decline in the first half of the year followed by recovery in the latter half, resulting in an overall annual growth estimate of 12% year-on-year.

Europe faced a significant loss in production capacity in the latter half of 2023 due to the closure of major European plants by Vallourec, leading to challenges for some pipe consumers in finding alternative suppliers.

In the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), pipe product production surged by 77% year-on-year, potentially driven by the substitution of Russian imports with local production. However, the production of welded pipes with an outer diameter of less than 406 mm declined by 24% year-on-year.

According to reports, Ukrainian pipe producers reduced exports by 11.8% in 2023 compared to the previous year, amounting to 356.35 thousand tons. The main consumers of Ukrainian-made pipes include Germany, the USA, Romania, and Poland.
