Coal production in Russia will decrease to 439 million tons by 2026

Total coal production in Russia may decrease by 3.9% to 439 million tons by 2026 compared to 2023. This forecast is given by analysts from the International Energy Agency (IEA). Experts expect a decline in exports in the next three years due to a decrease in maritime supplies.

Coal production in Russia will decrease to 439 million tons by 2026

A decrease in production is expected in the central part of Russia, while in the Far East production will continue to increase amid increased cooperation with China. According to the IEA, in 2022-2023 in Russia there will be a shift in production from the central regions to the east due to the imposed sanctions.

At the end of 2023, the IEA forecasts production of 457 million tons of coal, which is 2.9% more than last year. At the same time, cooperation with China had the main influence on production growth. In particular, over the nine months of 2023, about 60% of coal exports from Russia were sent to China and India. The share of thermal coal supplies also increased: to China from 28% to 49%, to India by 19%. The total volume of thermal coal exports from Russia in 2023 is expected to be 170 million tons (a decrease of 2.2%).
