Blastr Green Steel chooses Norway for pellet plant construction

Carbon-free steelmaker Blastr Green Steel has identified Lutelandet on the west coast of Norway as a potential location for a pellet plant to provide raw material for an ultra-low CO2 steel plant being developed in Inkoo, Finland.

Blastr Green Steel chooses Norway for pellet plant construction

Blastr has now signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Lutelandet Offshore Site & Drydock (LLOF) and Htwo-Fuel to explore the potential of the location.

The LOI includes a space sublease agreement between Blastr and LLOF and cooperation between Blastr and Htwo-Fuel to secure grid and energy capacity.

The future pellet plant will convert iron ore pellet feed into direct reduction pellets (DR pellets), which will be an important step in decarbonizing the global steel value chain.

In July, Blastr expressed interest in the Redcar Bulk Terminal (RBT) in Teesside, UK, as another potential location for the pellet plant. The company will now investigate the two sites to determine where to start its effort to decarbonize steel.

Hans Fredrik Wittusen, CEO of Blastr Green Steel, said Lutelandet is an ideal location to produce raw materials for its steel plants. With its existing industrial infrastructure, access to a sea port and clean renewable energy sources, Lutelandet is an attractive option, he said. Wittusen also stated that they look forward to collaborating with site partners and the community to accelerate the implementation of the pellet plant and develop the Lutelandet option to optimize low CO2 emission steel production.
