Baltic Power; Innovative steel processes

In Poland, Baltic Power intends to implement a world first by adopting environmentally friendly practices at its offshore wind farm that will be built. The electric arc furnace, powered by renewable energy, will use low-emission steel made from recycled raw materials. This will reduce the turbine's carbon footprint by 10%.

According to information from Vestas, the supplier of the turbines, the farm has partnered with ArcelorMittal to supply low-emission steel and the sustainable material used will account for 15% of the total steel.

ArcelorMittal's operations typically use recycled raw materials, while smelting in a wind-powered electric arc furnace is projected to reduce CO2 intensity per kilogram of steel by 66%. Mike Crawley, President and Chief Executive Officer of Northland Power, remarked that this new technology sets the new standard in sourcing sustainable materials for the global offshore wind industry, emphasizing the potential to further reduce carbon footprints.
