Arvedi launches first certified carbon neutral automotive steel

Italian steel producer Arvedi has received carbon neutral certification for its Cremona plant.

Arvedi launches first certified carbon neutral automotive steel

Arvedi has drastically reduced its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions by investing in a new electric arc furnace supplied by Tenova and reducing the use of pig iron and other polluting raw materials, CEO Mario Caldonazzo announced at Made in Steel.

The first carbon neutral certification for Arvedi's rolls, called "ARVzero", will be awarded for the supply of a major contract with Mercedes Benz starting in 2023. "We have demand for carbon neutral steel. We have signed with probably the most forward-thinking company that has decided to invest in this, but we are in discussions with many other carmakers. The incentive is coming from this sector, but a lot of customers also want to launch their own brand of green steel products because they also have demand."

Arvedi has also reduced its scope 3 emissions by 40% by 2022 and plans to achieve carbon neutral certification for its subsidiaries, pipe mills and also Acciai Speciali Terni.

The company is currently implementing an ongoing research and development project to produce high-quality steel without using pig iron and to optimise energy and raw material consumption. Arvedi can now reduce pig iron consumption in the metal loading mix from about 50 per cent to 10 per cent. To substitute pig iron, the company is investing in higher quality scrap and, in particular, in scrap selection and cleaning. Following the reduction of scope 1 emissions, the steelmaker started a voluntary programme to cover scope 1 emissions with emission reduction certificates from forestry. To reduce scope 2 emissions, it collaborated with Enel, which provides renewable energy with a guarantee of origin (GO) certificate. Caldonazzo explained that Arvedi has submitted its emission reduction project to the certification body RINA, which issued a carbon neutral certificate for the plant in Cremona in July 2022.
