Abdulkadir Uraloğlu: "Cargo volume handled at ports increased by 7.2 percent"

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu revealed that the amount of loads handled at ports increased by 7.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu made explanations regarding the data on maritime statistics for the January-March period prepared by the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs.

The Minister, who made the announcement in written form, reported that the amount of cargo handled at ports in the January-March period of 2024 increased by 7.2% compared to the same period last year and reached 134 million 327 thousand 597 tons. Making comments based on the data, Uraloğlu said that the 17.9% increase in the amount of containers handled in 2023 reached 3 million 350 thousand 817 TEU in 2024.

Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that Türkiye has become one of the important port centers of the world under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and emphasized the contribution to the national economy by increasing the volume of maritime trade.
Expressing his wish for the development of the maritime sector, Minister Uraloğlu shared the information that the transit cargo transported by sea in March was 5 million 699 thousand 607 tons and the amount of cargo handled in ports was 47 million 351 thousand 510 tons, while foreign trade transports increased by 14.8% compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 36 million 684 thousand 911 tons.

Most handled cargo was diesel fuel

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Uraloğlu stated that the cargo type that showed the highest increase in March compared to the previous month was diesel oil handling, and noted that 3 million 507 thousand 326 tons of diesel oil cargo was handled at the ports, followed by cargo carried in '40' full containers and iron ore and concentrates. Uraloğlu also said, "Portland cement cargo type took the first place with 1 million 40 thousand 381 tons among the export cargo handled in our ports. This was followed by diesel oil and feldspar. Crude oil ranked first among the import cargo handled in our ports. This was followed by scrap iron and unbriquetted hard coal, respectively."

Most handling in exports was done to Italy and imports to Russia

The Minister stated that the highest amount of cargo handled in March was to Italy, followed by shipments to the USA and Spain, while the highest amount of cargo handled in imports was from Russia.
Pointing out that 8.1 percent of the 36 million 684 thousand 911 tons of cargo handled in ports and subject to foreign trade was carried by Turkish ships, Uraloğlu said, "The amount of cargo carried by Turkish flagged ships increased by 29.1 percent in March with 2 million 965 thousand 1 tons compared to the same month of the previous year. The amount of cargo carried by foreign flagged ships increased by 13.6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year with 33 million 719 thousand 910 tons."

The amount of containers handled in ports last month reached 1 million 169 thousand 846 TEU, Uraloğlu said.

Aliağa handled the most cargo

The data revealed that the highest amount of cargo handling was realized in Aliağa with 7 million 720 thousand 348 tons. Abdulkadir Uraloğlu mentioned that the transit cargo transported by sea at the ports in March was 5 million 699 thousand 607 tons, adding that the amount of cargo transported in cabotage in the same month decreased by 5.1 percent compared to the same month last year with 4 million 966 thousand 992 tons, and added that Aliağa region was followed by Kocaeli with 7 million 365 thousand 591 tons and İskenderun regional ports with 5 million 669 thousand 99 tons.
