''We need to boost the level of investment in Türkiye's industrial areas''

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır pointed that the area devoted to industrial areas in Türkiye is only 0,36 percent and emphasized the necessity of expanding the planned industrial zones.

''We need to boost the level of investment in Türkiye's industrial areas''

Kacır highlighted that this percentage is low when compared to countries such as Germany and that there is a requirement to expand the planned industrial areas rapidly in Türkiye.

Minister Kacır indicated that investments in organized industrial zones and industry zones will continue. He announced that they declared 11 new organize industrial zones and extended the industrial zones this year, and added that they targeted to reach 360 organize industrial zones by 2023.

Technology-focused industrial action program and investments

Highlighting that they are building an R&D and innovation ecosystem in Türkiye, Kacır stated: "Today, there are more than 1,600 R&D and design centers. These centers have completed more than 70 thousand R&D projects to date. Currently, they are continuing more than 17,500 R&D projects and we support all these private sector R&D and design centers as the ministry. Today, we have increased the number of technoparks, which were only two 22 years ago, to 101 in more than 60 cities.

And in our 101 technoparks, more than 10 thousand technology initiatives continue their research and development activities and they have completed more than 55 thousand R&D projects with the support of our Ministry so far." Highlighting that Türkiye today has 272 thousand R&D human resources, Kacır added: "We are a country that exports over 7 billion dollars of high technology.

All statistics on R&D and innovation show a tremendous leap. The share of R&D expenditures in our national income rose from around 5 per thousand to 1.3 percent. The share of the private sector in R&D expenditures has risen from 29 percent to 61 percent. Today, the locomotive of R&D in Türkiye is the Turkish private sector."

R&D and innovation ecosystem

The Minister emphasized the increase in the private sector's R&D expenses, stating that Türkiye has established an R&D and innovation ecosystem. Explaining that today there are more than 1,600 R&D and design centers and more than 17,500 R&D projects are underway, Kacır said that Türkiye has become an important role player in R&D.

Production of defense industry and biotechnological pharmaceuticals

The Minister shared the success in the defense industry and the increase in biotechnological medicine production. Stating that defense industry exports increased from $250 million in 2002 to $5.5 billion last year, Kacır noted that the share of biotechnological medicine production in the sector has increased to 50 percent.

5G and battery technologies

Minister Kacır explained Türkiye's objectives for 5G technology. He also stated that investments in electric vehicle production should be accelerated by focusing on battery technologies. Noting that Türkiye can become a production base in this area, Kacır expressed that they have identified 5G and battery technologies as important strategic targets.

Underlining that battery technologies will be an important topic for them in the upcoming period, Kacır continued: "We have an automobile sector that exports 35 billion dollars, and this sector is currently facing several tests and challenges.

Electric vehicle revolution is coming faster than everyone thinks and expects. We have to accelerate battery investments in the coming period. We realize that only if we can realize battery investments, we can make Türkiye a production center in the electrical vehicle industry."
