ArcelorMittal starts decarbonisation work in Gijon

ArcelorMittal has taken its first step towards low carbon footprint steel production by announcing the start of construction of the Gijon Electrical Steel Plant in Gijon, north-west Spain.

Company, which has a coke oven plant, two blast furnaces, a wire rod and heavy plate mill at its Gijon port facility, said that the electric furnace will become part of the Long Products division at Austrias. The electric furnace will have the capacity to produce 1.1 million tonnes per year and will also be the first electric steel plant among its derivatives to be located in Europe.

SteelRadar reported on 7 January that the iron ore sintering plant in Gijon had resumed operations. Suspended in April 2023, the plant resumed operations this year in line with demand.
